GoVideo's VR3840 combines a progressive scan DVD player/recorder with a four-head hi-fi VCR, making it a valuable add-on to your entertainment system. The device supports such activities as archiving home movies, recording your favorite TV programs, and dubbing your VHS tapes onto high-quality DVD-R (write-once) or DVD-RW (rewritable) discs at the touch of a button. The recorder's built-in NTSC TV tuner and onscreen user interface even permit up to eight timer recordings over a single month in either DVD or VHS format, with five recording speeds providing up to six hours of content on each DVD disc.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the VR3840's DVD player stands ready to deliver the full playback potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The unit also digitally improves the input signal using GoVideo's DoMiNoFX technology, resulting in a picture that's as good as it gets on DVD.

Movie fans will dig the unit's GoVideo's AutoPlay feature, which automatically skips ads, movie trailers, and disc menus and jumps right to the start of the main attraction. Simply place the disc in the tray, press the play key, and the movie will start without interruption. In addition, the Your DVD function--another GoVideo exclusive--permanently stores the setup preferences that traditionally require changing each time you load a new DVD, such as widescreen playback or certain sound preferences.

The model's four-head VCR, meanwhile, delivers smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, while the hi-fi sound records and plays back stereo audio tracks. If you route the stereo output to an AV receiver, you can even enjoy four-channel (left, center, right, and monaural surround) Dolby Pro Logic mixes from TV and Dolby-encoded videocassettes.

Of course, the VR3840 does more than just play and record DVDs or videocassettes. It also offers support for DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW playback, along with CD, CD-R/RW, MP3-CD, JPEG-CD, and Kodak Picture CD compatibility. And unlike most other DVD/VCR combos, the VR3840 connects to your television and deliver DVD and VHS signals through any of its available video connections, including S-video and component video outputs. Now you can view both DVD and VHS content without having to change connections or switch TV inputs.

In the DVD audio realm, the VR3840 includes a digital coaxial audio output that connects directly to a full-featured A/V receiver. Once connected, you can listen to enveloping Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel home theater signals through a surround-sound speaker system. If you don't have a surround receiver, you can instead use the composite audio outputs and channel the audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo TVs.

The VR3840 measures 17 by 3 by 14 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.
